Dr. Costello (Professor of Physiology and Endocrinology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Dental School and the Greenebaum Cancer Center) and his colleague, Dr. Renty Franklin (Professor of Physiology in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Dental School and the Greenebaum Cancer Center) are recognized as world leaders in the area of prostate cancer metabolism. Their studies have led to the development of magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging of the prostate gland for the accurate detection and localization of malignant sites. They have combined for over 45 years of multiple funded research grants from NIH and other granting agencies, which total about 110 budget years and about $25,000,000 in current dollars. They have co-authored over 100 published scientific papers.

Dr. Les Costello has been selected as a "Warburg Invitee" for presentation at the Fourth International Conference on Tumor Cell Metabolism to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, October 15-18, 2006. The Conference is described as a highly select gathering of experts in the areas of tumor cell metabolism and associated drug development. A total of 25 invited speakers were chosen for their expertise and for having a record of innovative scientific contributions.
