Research Interests:
My research interests involve studying the development/maintenance of memory during HIV-1 infection, the role that apoptosis plays in this process and HIV-associated B cell lymphoma. I have produced a noninfectious HIV-1 transgenic rat which has normal CD4/8 T cell numbers but has an abnormal cytokine profile, severe B cell hyperplasia, a decreased expression of CD28 and Bcl-xL in CD4 T cells following activation, increased apoptosis and dysregulation in the development of effector/memory phenotype T cells. In this HIV-1 animal model, the associated immune abnormalities and B cell hyperplasia may be due to expression one or more of the HIV-1 proteins which may lead to abnormal T cell signaling. Our goals are to understand how expression of HIV gene products causes defects in the development or maintenance of T cell effector function and B cell hyperplasia in Tg rats and to identify the relevant viral gene.
