Research Interests:
My clinical pharmacology research interest involves the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis of investigational anti-cancer agents in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials. The proper use of anticancer agents requires an explicit understanding of their clinical pharmacology. Thus my lab is responsible for developing pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models to describe the relationship between dose, plasma concentrations, biologic response markers, clinical effect, and clinical toxicity. Through this understanding it is then possible to design appropriate regimens to maximize response while minimizing toxicity. In addition to the clinical pharmacokinetic properties my laboratory is also involved with better understanding the absorption (when applicable), distribution, and metabolism of the new anticancer agents. This is accomplished using a variety of cell culture as well as other in vitro or in vivo techniques including the use of cell uptake and transport studies, liver microsomal metabolism, and in vivo animal pharmacokinetic, distribution, and toxicology studies.

The laboratory is also keenly interested in the physiologic expression of the Breast Cancer Resistance Protein (BCRP/ABCG2) and its role in the absorption, distribution, and elimination of those drugs that are substrates for this transporter.
