Why do some people have elfin ears (ears that are pointy at the top)? Is this a DNA defect that may indicate a disease process or hereditary birth defect?

The appearance of the ears is a variant, just like all noses are different. They do not necessarily indicate any separate disease process, although certain syndromes are associated with ear changes.

I'm 19 years old and have an abnormal skull shape. I want to know if it's possible to correct this. If there is any information you could give me regarding procedures or refer me to someone who specializes in cranioplastic surgery I would greatly appreciate it.

Given your age, you are best a candidate for various skull shaping implants that would not necessarily involve major brain-exposing surgeries. Please call for an appointment for a comprehensive evaluation by calling 410-328-FACE. Look forward to meeting you. Thomas T. Le, MD

I have a hematoma on my cheekbone after a bad fall nearly 2 months ago-my doctor does not want to drain it and tells me it should probably resolve on its own but may take many months-I am fearful that my face may be disfigured if it does not heal-is there any way that I can speed the healing process? It itches, burns, and has sharp pains through it at times-Is this a sign of healing?

If your hematoma was associated with a cheekbone fracture, you can have problems in the long run. It is best that you have an evaluation. Please call 410-328-FACE to schedule an appointment. Sincerely, Thomas T. Le, MD

What is the wet inside part of the lips made of, i.e. fat or what and can some of it be removed to prevent me from habitually biting on it-lower lip.

Your lips are made of skin, muscle, fat, glands, and other structures. If you have excessive lip size, absent from teeth issues, then removal of portions of your lip is a very practical and safe solution. Please call 410-328-FACE for a comprehensive evaluation. Sincerely, Thomas T. Le, MD

I am interested in lower eyelid surgery for bags under the eyes - I think it is called blepharoplasty - but I am not sure I can afford it. Before I set up an appointment for a consultation, is it possible to receive a rough idea of the typical cost? I don't want to waste our time if there is no way for me to do it.

The costs for eyelid plastic surgery and/or minimally invasive treatments ranges from $250-$4000 depending on what you would want done and the facilities employed. It would be worth your time to come visit us, even if it were simply to educate yourself on the myriad of surgical and nonsurgical treatments available for you to rejuvenate your eyelid and face appearance. Sincerely, Thomas T. Le, MD
