Can a 6 year old boy get a purulent pneumonia or empyema? Is it the same? And if so, what is the treatment?

A child at any age can get a purulent pneumonia. An empyema is an infection in the space around the lung while the pneumonia is inside the lung. The treatment for pneumonia is antibiotics. An empyema is treated with antibiotics and possibly surgery. I hope this answers your question. Iley Browning, MD
