I read there is something that can be done for those who have gained their weight back. I have after 5 years. I am ashamed and I am desperate to take back control of my body.

There are many reasons that people gain back weight after a bypass operation. The important point is to find out the reason and address it. Is it behavioral or physiological? My best suggestion would be to sign up for a seminar with Dr. Kligman, which can be done online at www.umm.edu/weightloss. That is the first step to getting an appointment with us. During your inital evaluation appointment, we can discuss what the best options are for you. Sincerely yours, Ms. Noel Stevens, CRNP University of Maryland Medical Center Department of General Surgery Division of Bariatrics nstevens@smail.umaryland.edu 410-328-3838

I am interested in weight loss surgery. However, I don't have health issues. In fact,I have not been to a doctor in eight years. I am very obese--my BMI is 40. I have done every diet, exercised, but I always gain back the weight and then some. Can I be a candidate for surgery, even though I don't have any major health issues?

You can be a candidate for surgery with a BMI of 40 or greater without comorbidities. We would love to see you! If interested, you can register for one of our seminars on line. Hope this helps! Nadja McClain Muchow R.N.

When someone has bypass surgery and your stomach is the size of a small ball, is it the same as if you eat a little bit a day and you maintain that habit? Will you still melt the fat in your body ?

No. With gastric bypass surgery not only is the size of the stomach reduced, but the intestines are rearranged to allow the body only to absorb a limited amount of calories. You will lose weight if the amount of calories being burned off in a day is greater than the amount of calories being ingested.

I had gastric bypass surgery 13 years ago. Now at 4 ft. 11 and 170lbs I have regained much weight. Do you offer revision surgery such as Stomafix?

We do offer revisional surgery, but not stomafix. However, the type revision would depend on the type of surgery done originally and the cause of the failure (behavioral or surgical). I would recommend that before considering revisional surgery that you preserve the weight loss you have had and make sure you are following basic bypass tenets. For example: * Three meals a day with no snacking in between and total no more than 1200-1500 calories per day. * Aerobic exercise 45 minutes a day at least 4 times a week * Make protein the focus at each to keep the pouch full longer. * Following the 30/90 rule * Take in only non-caloric liquid between meals * Make sure your vitamin levels are regularly checked. I hope this helps provide some guidance.
